First I would like to thank the Steel Charitable Trust for kindly agreeing to meet all the costs of production for this and the May edition of the gazette. This is very generous indeed and much appreciated.

Can I particularly draw your attention to Norman Wragg’s article ‘Two important posts to fill’. Sadly we are to lose the services of our treasurer, Richard Kidals. I am sure you will all agree with me that he has been highly effective in this role.

It is also sad to have to end this edition of the gazette with another obituary, this time for Tom Barbour. Stan has written a fine obituary for him.

Well, on a happier note, I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year and that you are all successful in the rest of this chess season. Could I have any contributions to the May gazette by Friday 11th April. Thanks.
