Two Games from the BCCL

Having won both his games in the BCCL Peter Gibbs sent in the scores of both of his wins with light notes; I thought readers might like to play through the games.

RICHARD FRIES (CS Enthusiasts) - PETER GIBBS (BCA)

Closed Sicilian

With hindsight I wondered whether this was too bold because I seemed to obtain a difficult game. I thought that as my opponent was playing so positionally I could try and take the initiative. Maybe I should have played 7 -d6 followed by -f5.

8 0-0 0-0 9 Ne2 b6 10 c3 Ba6 11 e5  f6 12 Re1 Qd7 13 d4 Rad8 14 exf6 Bxf6 15 Be3 Qd6 16 g4 Bg7 17 Qd2 Na5 18 b3 Nac6 19 Ng3 cxd4 20 cxd4 Rc8 21 Rac1 Bb7 22 h4 Qd7 23 Ne5 Qd6 24 Bf1 Qb4 25 Qb2 Nxe5 26 fxe5 Nc6 27 Bd3

A mistake, but understandable as White wishes to keep up the pressure. Necessary was 27 Be2. It is remarkable how White's position disintegrates after Black's next move.

27 -Nxe5 28 dxe5 Qxg4 29 Bf2 Rf3 30 Rxc8+  Bxc8 31 Qc2 Rxg3+ 32 Bxg3 Qxg3+ 33 Kf1 Qf3+ 34 Kg1 Bb7 35 Qe2 Qg3+  36 Kf1 Bh6 37 Bb5 d4 38 Qf2 Qh3+ 39 Ke2 Be3

White resigned.

PETER GIBBS - RICHARD FRIES

King’s Indian

The Averbach System is a favourite of mine and I have had success with it in OTB play. With inexact play by Black White can obtain a strong bind.

I was especially pleased with this move, but it took me a long time to win against my opponent's determined resistance.
