All Under One Roof

Due to being extremely busy and seeming to be away more than at home, I wasn’t sure if I would get time to write my All Under One Roof report. I am therefore writing this at the 11th hour on this beautiful April afternoon.

Below you will find four mainstream congresses that are all held in hotels, and I have received excellent feedback regarding the three organisers concerned.

Rebecca tells me that it will be a very packed Gazette, so without further ceremony I will go straight into the events.

2nd - 6th June 2012: e2e4 Diamond Jubilee Congress: held at the Crowne Plaza, Langley Drive, Crawley, Sussex, RH11 7SX. When I wrote my article for the last edition, this completely missed my radar. This congress begins on a Saturday and is a 9 round FIDE international tournament, situated close to Gatwick Airport. It was initially aimed at players of all strengths but I have since heard that there may not be a minor section. Therefore, I advise you to check before booking. For more information or to obtain a booking form, please contact Sean Hewitt or visit www.e2e4.org.uk.

8th - 10th June 2012: South Lakes Congress: held at the Cumbria Grand Hotel, Grange-Over-Sands. This is a five round Swiss, with the first round beginning on Friday evening, two rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday. The rate of play is all moves in two hours. This tournament has five sections: an open, major (170), intermediate (150), minor (135), and minor 2 (120 or 115 to be confirmed). I found this congress to have a very friendly atmosphere and once again a great favourite with BCA members. A very comfortable hotel with its own extensive gardens. If I remember rightly, chess is played in a very grand ballroom in the basement, so there is no fear of sweltering in the June sunshine, at least not whilst playing chess! However, this does once again unfortunately clash with the BCA Chairman’s Cup, but for those who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend our own event at Bournemouth, I highly recommend you venture north to the South Lakes. For more details and an entry form, please contact Trevor Blower or Dave Cole.

24th - 27th August 2012: e2e4 Leicestershire Chess Congress: held at the Barceló Hinckley Island Hotel, Watling Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire, LE10 3JA. Beginning on Friday evening and closing on Bank Holiday Monday, this is a 7 round congress with sections for players of all standards. I am still yet to attend an e2e4 congress, but they have certainly proven to be very popular with those members who have attended. For more information or to obtain a booking form please contact Sean Hewitt.

28th - 30th August: Third Jorvik Chess Congress held at the Holiday Inn, Tadcaster Road, York, YO24 1QF. This congress which is run by one of our Associate Members, begins on a Tuesday and is a six round Swiss with two rounds each day. The time control is 90 minutes each, games being played between 10 am and 1 pm and then 2 pm till 5 pm. At the discretion of the organiser this event will have two sections. There will also be an opportunity to analyse games with an ECF accredited coach. To find out more or to obtain a booking form, please contact Peter Cloudsdale.

If you wish to make a claim under the Grass Roots Scheme for any of these events, or wish to find out whether you are eligible to claim, or simply wish to register your attendance, please do not hesitate to contact me. You will find my details on the website under my role as Membership Secretary.
